Pastor Jose & Betsy Mata
An Essay and Interview with Pastor Jose

Pastor Jose & Betsy Mata

Welcome from the flock of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at Holy Ground Christian Fellowship.

Jesus said “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke fits perfectly, and the burden I give you is tight”. Matthew 11:28-30 (NLT)

Come and join us as we go through His teachings to conquer our daily battles, and become victorious through his word. Learn the spiritual riches the Lord has for each one of us.

We are a come as you are congregation.

In His Service,

Pastor Jose & Betsy Mata

Pastoral Interview
By
Monica Delgadillo
Internship CHM411 Professor Ken Goodban
 Spring Semester 2006

1. Describe the Pastor’s Leadership style, as revealed through this interview and your own observations.

Pastor Jose is very transparent; he speaks from his heart. The life he lived is the life he uses to help transform others with the gospel of Christ. He has no problem being truthful, even if it offends. He is willing to reach out to those who are undesirable to most Christians. He has a teacher/mentor style of leadership kind of like Christ, he likes to bring people along side, get the people thinking, showing them that they need to desire the will to change and it can happen if they let God handle the hard stuff.

2. What is the Pastor’s philosophy on ministry (convictions regarding how ministry should be done within their area of expertise and responsibility)?

Meet the people where they are. His expertise is in the street life; he feels that his life that was once a life style became his calling to a specific people. He knows how to relate to people who struggle with addictions, the ones that are so unlovable to many, God has given him the ability to relate in such away, that God’s word is shed to bear on the issues of life.

3. How is time divided each week in the Pastor’s schedule? (Message preparation, administration, visitation, counseling, discipleship, etc.)

Pastor Jose is not only a full time Pastor He is also a full time employee at UPS. His wife Betsy is an awesome partner in the ministry as well as the associate Pastor Gil and his wife Rose. This team gives their time devotedly to ministry. Having cell phones allow many to get in touch with this ministry team.
Pastor Jose holds very much to the open door policy, He goes wherever and whenever he is needed. Of course He is committed to His Job at UPS but his heart is truly to love the people God had provided for him to shepherd.

4. What are the Pastor’s strengths and how have they been developed?

He believes one of His great strengths is having a love for people and being able to see how God loves them as well. 1Corinthians 13:1-2 is a verse that comes to mind when you look at Pastor Jose, especially the last portion of verse 2, But have not love, I am nothing. The moment I meet this man, the love of God, the compassion for others was and still is very evident in this individual life.

5. What are the Pastor’s weaknesses and how has he compensated for them?

Pastor Jose strength he considers also his weakness, the difficult part of his strength is always remembering to love the people God puts in his path with God’s love and not his own. Like any pastor I hope he compensates for his weakness by seeking after God by reading the word and learning what it is to truly love with God’s Love.

6. What are the Pastor’s areas of greatest frustration?

His frustration is seeing people with the potential of overcoming sin or obstacles and being able to form a great relationship with Christ, but the hindrance of their negativity toward the one person that can truly set them free, and their blindness in their hearts, is very frustrating for this Pastor.

7. What are the Pastor’s areas of greatest joy and fulfillment?

Like most Pastor’s, seeing a person coming to the Lord and really seeking and growing, and truly believing in Christ is one of his greatest joys. In other words seeing the potential coming alive.

8. If they could do it all over again, what would the Pastor do differently?

“I would not change a thing, because I have seen God’s hand in everything, He has shown me that, He has been their for him and the church.”

9. What is the best piece of advice that the Pastor can give you about surviving in ministry?

To remember that I belong to God and He will never leave me or forsake me and to remember that the people I am leading are His children also.

This man’s heart and passion drives to have a church that reaches to bikers, drug addicts, people who have been in jail and still are, homeless; and even makes room to encourage a maturing Christian lady in bible college who has learn that ministry isn’t just for suits and dresses but leather and bikes are just in the race of seeking to win those for the Lord, different methods but the same message Christ died for You. Sometimes I wish people that are supposed to be God’s people cam see that we are on the same team.
